Overcoming Learning Disorders

If your child is having trouble in school, you probably know that he or she is not alone. What you may not know is that learning problems often have at their root a visual deficiency. Consider these little-known facts:
* During their early years, 80-90% of children's learning is visual. A vision disorder will seriously interfere with a young child's ability to learn.
* As many as 25% of school-aged children have had some sort of vision problems which hinder their ability to read and learn.
* The rate may be as high as 60% for children with demonstrated learning problems.
* School vision screening can only detect about 5% of all possible visual problems.
Symptoms children with vision problems exhibit include squinting, reversal of letters or numbers, avoidance of reading, and generally poorer than expected performance in school. In our office, we perform comprehensive eye examinations that emphasize testing those visual skills that are most essential to the learning process for young children, including attention span, eye-hand coordination and depth perception. Vision therapy that focuses on educational development can help children in their early years overcome the deficiencies that inhibit learning.
